A brief history
Kanadan sfinx sai alkunsa vuonna 1966 Torontossa, kun sattumalta kotikissaemolle syntyi karvaton pentu luonnollisen geneettisen mutaation seurauksena. Tämä ja muutamat muut luonnollisesti karvattomana syntyneet kissat ovat kanadan sfinx –rodun perustana.[1] Puhdasrotuinen kanadan sfinx ei ole hybridi.
The Canadian sphynx originates from Toronto, where in 1966 a domestic cat gave birth to a hairless kitten as a result of a natural genetic mutation. This and a few other cats born naturally hairless are the basis of the Canadian Sphynx breed.[1] The purebred Canadian Sphynx is not a hybrid.

Karvattomuus itsessään edellyttää säännöllistä hoitoa, minkä vuoksi kanadan sfinx saattaa olla perinteisiä kissoja työläämpi rotu. Kanadan sfinxin ohut nukkamainen turkki ei riitä imemään ihosta ja syljestä erittyvää rasvaa, jonka vuoksi kissa onkin kylvetettävä säännöllisesti.
Toisinaan sfinx saattaa olla säilyttänyt kissanvaistonsa eikä siedä lainkaan kastumista, jolloin kasvattajan rooli kissan pikkupentuvaiheessa on korostunut. Pentu tulisi olla totutettu hoitotoimenpiteisiin. Uudessa kodissa säännöllisiä hoitotoimia, kuten kylvetystä on syytä jatkaa tavan vahvistamiseksi. Kylvettämisen määrä riippuu kissan ihonlaadusta, ruokavaliosta sekä omistajan mieltymyksistä.
The hairlessness itself requires regular grooming, which may make the Canadian Sphynx a more laborious breed than traditional cats. The thin, downy coat of the sphynx is not sufficient to absorb the oil secreted from the skin and saliva, which means that the cat must be bathed regularly.
Sometimes the sphynx may have retained its cat instinct and doesn't tolerate bathing, thus emphasizing the role of the breeder in the cat's infancy. The kitten should be accustomed to grooming. In a new home, regular grooming, such as bathing, should be continued to establish the habit. The amount of bathing will depend on the cat's skin condition, diet, and the owner's preferences.

Kanadan sfinx on perusterve kissarotu. Hypertrofinen kardiomyopatia on kissojen yleisin sydän- ja verisuonisairaus, jota tavataan myös kanadan sfinxillä. Suosittelemme pennun hankkimista terveeksi tutkituista vanhemmista ja linjoista sekä oman kissan sydämen ultraäänitutkimusta PawPeds:in HCM:n terveysohjelmaan kuuluvan eläinlääkärin suorittamana säännöllisesti.
The Canadian sphynx is a healthy breed. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common cardiovascular disease in cats and is also found in the Canadian sphynx. We recommend getting a kitten from healthy, tested parents and lines and having your cat's heart ultrasound scanned by a PawPeds HCM Health Program veterinarian on a regular basis.

Kissojen Fel d1 -proteiinin tasot ja ihmisten herkkyys kissojen allergeeneille ovat yksilöllisiä. Kanadan sfinx ei ole hypoallergeeninen rotu ja näin ollen emme suosittele rotua allergiaperheeseen.
Cats produce numerous proteins, including Fel d1 protein, which has been identified as the main cat allergen. Fel d1 protein is mainly produced in cats saliva and in the sebaceous glands of the skin. The protein causes an allergic or asthmatic response in sensitive humans.[1]
Fel d1 protein levels in cats and human sensitivity to feline allergens are individual. The Canadian Sphynx is not a hypoallergenic breed and therefore we do not recommend sphynx for an allergic family.
